Hoi Ri Moon is Professor of the Department of Chemistry and Nanoscience at Ewha Womans University and Director of the Institute for Multiscale Materials Science (IMMS). Under her leadership, IMMS has moved beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries to establish a problem-driven interdisciplinary framework for multiscale materials technologies. This work has strengthened collaboration across research groups and positioned IMMS among leading centers in the field. She also serves as Project Leader of the CP2: Next-Generation Convergence Systems project.
Professor Moon’s research focuses on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that are widely regarded as key materials in advanced functional materials science. Her work has developed systematic design principles and refined synthetic approaches for porous MOFs while providing insights into structureproperty relationships that address the performance and processing limitations of conventional materials. These contributions have broadened the scope of applications across diverse areas including catalysis, sensing, and gas separation and storage.
In the field of MOFs, she is regarded as one of Korea’s leading researchers. She was selected as one of 30 invited speakers worldwide at the MOF Nobel Symposium organized by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. She also became the first researcher from Asia to receive the International Award for Creative Work from the Japan Society of Coordination Chemistry (JSCC), reflecting international recognition of her creative contributions to the field. She was appointed an Ewha Fellow under Ewha Womans University’s 10-10 Global Frontier Initiative and elected to Y-KAST of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST).
