Developing On-Device Real-Time Ultrasound AI Technology for Next-Generation Medical Devices

RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS 18 June 2026

The research team led by IMMS Prof. Jang-Hwan Choi has been selected for a new project under the 2026 Pan-Ministerial Advanced Medical Device R&D Program to develop on-device real-time ultrasound AI technology for use in emergency and critical care, as well as pre-hospital settings.

The project brings together researchers from Ewha Womans University, Samsung Medison Co., Ltd., Samsung Medical Center, and Sungkyunkwan University. Over 57 months from April 2026, the consortium will receive KRW 4.75 billion in government research funding. The team will develop technologies for real-time image analysis, scanning guidance, abnormality detection, and quantitative measurement on handheld and portable ultrasound devices.

Prof. Choi’s research team will focus on core AI technologies including quantization, lightweight design, and optimization of on-device AI models, as well as real-time scanning guidance based on 4D echocardiography and reinforcement-learning-based AI for probe position and orientation control. These technologies are expected to enable high-performance AI to operate in real time on portable ultrasound devices with limited computing resources, expanding the practical applications of medical ultrasound AI.

IMMS will continue to advance AI-driven medical technologies that can be applied in real-world clinical settings, fostering interdisciplinary research and creating innovative solutions at the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare.
