Prof. Suyeon Cho's Joint Research Team Propose New Directions for Next-Generation Low-Power Electronics

A study highlighting the potential of van der Waals (2D) materials as a new approach to ultra-low-power electronics has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Reviews Materials.

A research team led by Prof. Suyeon Cho of IMMS, in collaboration with researchers from the Department of Physics at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), has highlighted the potential of van der Waals (vdW) materials as a key approach for next-generation low-power electronic devices and proposed new directions for materials and device design.

The study focuses on the unique electrical and structural properties of two-dimensional van der Waals materials with atomic-scale thickness. Based on these properties, the research team presented their potential for applications in low-power transistors, nonvolatile memory, neuromorphic, and adaptive electronic devices, offering new possibilities for overcoming the energy-efficiency limitations of conventional silicon-based electronics.

The study demonstrates the potential of van der Waals materials as key materials for future electronic devices requiring high energy efficiency, while also identifying major challenges for industrial applications, including wafer-scale synthesis, process compatibility, and material reliability. The research was published in <Nature Reviews Materials>, a leading international journal in materials science, and was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea’s Mid-Career Researcher Program and the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) Program.

IMMS will continue to develop innovative technologies in next-generation electronic materials and energy-efficient electronic devices, while advancing world-class research for the future of the electronics industry.
